About me...

Alex Mendoza is a freelance musician based out of Columbia, MD.  As a percussionist and timpanist, his recent performance experience includes the Baltimore Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Ft. Worth Symphony, and the Classical Tahoe Festival Orchestra.

As an educator, he has been teaching privately and in large ensemble settings since 2013. Most recently, he was the Percussion Director/Asst. Director of the United States Naval Academy for the spring semester of 2025. Prior to moving to MD, Alex held a private studio of 40+ students in the Austin Metroplex. Past students of his have been successful in the TMEA All-State Auditions, and have attended schools such as the University of Texas, University of North Texas, Rice University, and Texas State University. Teaching music is something he cherishes, and loves to share knowledge with anyone that is willing to learn.

Throughout his career, Alex has sought to be a versatile musician. In 2021 and 2023, he played with the Classical Tahoe Summer Festival Orchestra as their Percussion Fellow. In 2020, he was a semi-finalist for the Sphinx Orchestral Partners Audition. In the summers of 2017-2018, he attended the Aspen Music Festival and School, where he played in large orchestra concerts and chamber ensembles, and taught private lessons to students in the Roaring Fork Valley. As a chamber musician and lover of new music, he attended the Center for Advanced Musical Studies at Chosen Vale in 2016, led by Doug Perkins and Amy Garapic.  From 2012-2015, he was a part of the Santa Clara Vanguard  Drum and Bugle Corp as a member of the Front Ensemble, led by Paul and Sandi Rennick.

Alex received his B.M. in Music Education from the University of North Texas, and his M.M. from Duquesne University. He will start his Doctoral Program at the University of Maryland in fall of 2025. His past primary teachers include Christopher Deane, Mark Ford, Paul Rennick, Edward Stephan, John Soroka, and Chris Allen.

Currently, he lives in Maryland with his wife, Chloe, and their two cats, Bulldozer and Potato. When he is not practicing, he enjoys strength training, baking, reading, and playing Dungeons and Dragons.
